STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

Accommodations for students with disabilities

The Institute will attempt to accommodate students with disabilities where reasonable for all residencies and public programs taking place at the Institute. Students with hearing or sight impairment must arrange for assistance in note-taking on their own, but the Institute will attempt to accommodate their needs where reasonable. Students must be able to participate in online courses and to attend residencies, for there are no available substitutes for those two requirements.

Advising

The program director serves as the initial advisor, after which each student selects an adviser from among the faculty in his/her genre. Advising takes place both in person during residencies and online or through e-mail throughout the year. Through its membership in Associated Writing Programs, the MFA Program makes available a wide range of information including the AWP Job List, the AWP Writers Chronicle and the AWP Annual Meeting.

Financial Assistance

The Institute offers a limited number of scholarships. Details and application form are available on the web site at http://www.writeonwhidbey.org/mfa/forms/.

Library

In a low-residency program, students will most often use a combination of online library resources and libraries near their homes. The Institute’s web site maintains links to major online library resources in its Online Library.

Placement Services

The Institute has no placement service of its own but encourages students to use the Associated Writing Programs (AWP) placement service or to rely on the placement service at the student's undergraduate college. AWP also offers a jobs list as part of its placement services. Faculty and the MFA program director will also advise students during the program on employment opportunities for writers.

Student Handbook

The student handbook contains information about student rights and responsibilities, including procedures for disciplinary action, complaints, grievances, etc. Each student is provided with a hard copy of the handbook, and a copy is included on the Northwest Institute of Literary Arts web site.
